of what can be done to a tree
As a tree surgeon we can only ever remove parts of a tree. Knowing how to do that in a safe and responsible manner takes time, skill and knowledge. While anyone can use a saw and cut a tree, only a professional knows how to find the correct balance between what people want and also whats best for the actual tree itself. 'Lopping' and 'Topping' are not words you will find us using.
Where possible, all of our work is done to BS 3998:2010, which is the British Standards recommendations for Tree Work.
This is where we remove the lower limbs to achieve a height clearance from the ground or neighbouring buildings to allow vehicle access, open up views or allow more light.
No more than 15% of the live crown height should be removed and the remaining live crown should be at least two-thirds the height of the tree.
This is the removal of up to 30% of secondary branches throughout the crown to produce a well spaced and balanced canopy. This maintains the original shape of the tree while allowing more light through and relieves stress on the canopy.
This is the removal of any dead, diseased, damaged or dying branches and also any other climbing plants.
This is usually done to trees where falling objects pose a risk of injury or damage to property.
This is reducing the actual size of the canopy, while still maintaining a natural shape to the tree. This is usually done to allow the retention of a tree in a confined space or to create a desired appearance and make it more suited to its surroundings.
It also reduces the area of the tree which is open to the wind and therefore can reduce the stress on it.
Pollarding is the removal of the entire canopy of the tree to encourage formation of new branches arising from the same height on the main stem or principal branches.
Re-pollarding is maintaining the form of the original pollard with regular cutting.
While we make every effort to maintain and preserve all trees, it is not always possible and removing a tree is usually done as a last option.
Felling is usual done from the ground and the entire tree above ground is cut and felled in one piece. This usually requires a significant amount of space to allow the tree to fall.
Dismantling is when a tree has to be removed in small sections due to immovable objects below the tree. This is often done with a climber entering the tree or where possible, with a Mobile Elevated Work Platform or cherry picker.
Hedge Work
We are also highly experienced in all aspects of hedge work and can offer anything from a routine trim, a reduction in height or width to a complete removal to make way for replanting or installation of fencing etc.
Stump Grinding
This is the removal of the trees stump and close proximity roots via the use of a grinder. This has minimal impact on the surrounding area and frees up the space to allow replanting or instalation of fences etc.
Storm Damage / Emergency Tree Work
If the worst happens and a tree either falls over or is damaged for whatever reason, we can provide the right tools and skillset to make the tree and your area safe again.
